Learn moreHistory of the Region
The Fernpass was formed around 4,100 years ago by a massive landslide that also created the Fernpass lakes. The Romans built the Via Claudia Augusta over it, connecting the Adriatic to Augsburg. In the Middle Ages, long-distance trade and salt transport from Hall towards Lake Constance brought post stations, inns, and jobs to the villages. In 1926, the first cable car to the Zugspitze opened in Ehrwald – marking the beginning of modern tourism.
